In response to the growing need for education and assistance with student loans, Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Buffalo, Inc. (CCCS Buffalo) will begin offering Student Loan Counseling, a service designed to assist individuals with student loans
Student loans are a growing financial concern for many individuals. According to the Federal Reserve Board of New York State, the outstanding student loan balance is now approximately $870 billion, higher than both credit card and auto loan balances. With college enrollments increasing and the costs of education rising, this balance is expected to continue to rise. In addition to student loan debt rising, the default rate has also increased. In fiscal year 2009 the default rate rose sharply to 9% among borrowers who entered repayment, up from 7%.  Due to the complexity of the student loan market and  options available during repayment, many individuals with student loans feel overwhelmed and have no place to turn for help.
CCCS of Buffalo, Inc. has certified financial counselors ready to help those with student loan issues. Specifically, CCCS Buffalo is local, non-profit agency committed to promoting financial self-sufficiency. Their business is your credit. They are a member of the Better Business Bureau with an A+ rating, a member of the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC), accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Services for Families & Children (COA), Inc. and affiliated with the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County.  They have served the WNY community for over 45 years.
During a Student Loan Counseling Session our Certified Financial Counselors will:
·        Evaluate student loan debt (current or in default)
·        Explore options for student loans including deferments, forbearances, alternative repayment plans, and consolidation loans
·        Assist in applying for the appropriate option
·        Assist in communicating with the lender, as needed
·        Review credit score, credit report and living expenses
CCCS Buffalo can help consumers in a variety of other ways as well. New expanded hours include a Live Counseling Line Open: Monday-Thursday 8:00 am-8:00 pm and Friday 8:00 am-4:00 pm.
